Your 20s are a time of learning and growth, but looking back, there are some key lessons I wish I had known earlier. For those just starting their careers, especially from visible minority backgrounds, here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Your network is as important as your resume.
Opportunities come through connections. Start building relationships early. Reach out to mentors, attend events, and invest in your network.
2. It’s okay to pivot.
Don’t be afraid to change paths. Your first job isn’t your final destination, and changing direction is often a sign of growth, not failure.
3. Seek mentorship.
Having someone to guide you is invaluable, especially if you’re facing challenges unique to your identity. A good mentor will help you navigate professional environments and open doors.
4. Embrace your unique perspective.
As a visible minority, you may feel pressure to fit in. But your identity is your strength. Don’t hide it—let it shine through in your work.
5. Failure is part of the process.
Every mistake is a lesson. Embrace failure, learn from it, and use it as a stepping stone toward success.
Your 20s are a time to explore, grow, and define your career path—don’t be afraid to take risks.
